Shrawan Mukarung

Khaptad Baba

SHiva Prakash

Deepak Jadit

Story : Murkuttae Bhut

~Soham Dhakal~

If I remember correctly, as a child, the rumors about Murkuttae Bhut had been very frightening. Now that I think about it, it was a deep resentment that could not be explained. Oh yes, there were a lot of “Bhut” stories that would send me diving into my bed to be covered by the protective power of the blanket. But Murkuttae was a different story. I remember vividly the first time I had the courage to inquire about them. I had asked my grandmother.

” What is a Murkuttae Bhut?” Continue reading

Story : Prabhuji’s Son

~Prawin Adhikari~Prawin Adhikari

Harihar tightly grasps the toes of his opposite legs as he sits patiently in the lotus position, waiting for Sangita to knead his head and tell if the pumpkin is ripe enough for her to take to the king’s ordained feast, but he is of a much darker complexion than his peers. There is a story about Harihar that nobody in Bhaluodar wants to discuss.

Although Prabhuji was only a peon in a government office, the groom’s entourage to his eldest daughter’s wedding returned very happy because they had been showered with lavishness much beyond their expectations. With his second daughter Prabhuji felt his resources strained, but he still made a valiant effort. For the first time in the village, he hired a sturdy tractor to escort a band of musicians in novel livery, and to transport all the way from Dumre a set of factory-made dowry furniture. “What need is there to keep showing our friends that we are comfortably provided?” his wife suggested for their third daughter’s wedding, insisting that the taste of feasts he had given for previous two marriages hadn’t yet washed off the tongues of the villagers and relatives. Although Prabhuji had to sell most of his wife’s jewels to buy a new set for his third daughter, he obliged like a dutiful father that he was. Continue reading

Story : Cafe D’amor

~Jayendra Pathak~

I can’t say what made me fall in love with this cafe. Everything is so intense, the colors, the taste, even the Rain not the filthy rain as that of my town. They say whatever you are looking for, you will find here. They say when you come to café d amor, you will understand love in a few minutes. The rest is got to be lived. The smell is the first thing that hits you promising everything in exchange for your soul. The food sounds, and almost certainly was quite disgusting, chosen to be exotic rather than delicious; some of the old menus had still survived. Continue reading

Story : Untitled

~Prawin Adhikari~Prawin Adhikari

A child’s green shoe in the thorny shadows of a cactus hedge—wet, small, pitiably lonely without its pair—accused Janaki of slaughter. She crouched to hide from the world, but the wind caught her scent and blew it to the house where her husband laughed with his second wife. An angry afternoon sun boiled the sweat on her skin and the blood in her head, the veins in her eyes. The green shoe became a mortal enemy. Continue reading

Story : Conversations

~Soham Dhakal~

“You know, sometimes I wish that I could dissapear. Its not because I am running away from anything, its just that I want to vanish. Just because. There is actually no rational explanation. Well maybe because I get bored with everything. Or.. I don’t know.”
Conversations, yes they just start like this between us. I shouldn’t say always but at least the ones that I remember or the ones I choose to remember. Yes, we are people caught between cultures, caught between realities, caught between responsibilities and expectations. We are also confined within reason. So there is not much to complain here. Story : The “Itch”

~Manjari Himchuli~

I first noticed the itch when I was maybe nine or ten years old. I think I might have had contracted it from one of my good friends as I started experiencing it right after she won her first ever poetry contest. She had come first. My competitive spirit had awakened. And I got the itch to write. I tried to relieve it by penning down some of my patriotic sentiments in the form of a poem,’Kartabya'(responsibility). I had listed (according to the mind of a ten year old) all the responsibilities that a Continue reading
