Story : My Love…My Suspicion …and Then…

~Shristy Tuladhar~

I have suffered many disappointments in love. But, when Sophie came, everything changed. The first time I met her was at a friend’s party. I was head over heels in love with her. I found out that she was my best friend Brian’s sister who was living separately.

Once or twice when I visited him neighborhood, I came across her, but as far as possible I tried to avoid her b’coz of Brian.

I loved her and wanted her just as badly as ever. So, one day I went straight to Sophie and told her that I loved her. I hadn’t much hope that she’d care for me straight away, and would have knocked me down with a feather when she asked me why I hadn’t told her sooner. I stammered out something about Brian and she said, “But I have already told Brian that I love u and he is very happy about it”. And then she told that she’d fallen in love with me just as I’d done with her-from the very first minute.

Sophie and I got married a month later and we were happy. But I realized as soon as she was really mine that, I wasn’t really cut out for the best kind of husband. I loved Sophie devotedly, but I was jealous, absurdly jealous of anyone she so much smiled at. It amused her at first. It proved at least, how devoted I was.

Slowly she began to draw away from me. Not in any physical sense, but she withdrew her secret mind from me. I no longer knew what her thoughts were. She was kind–but sadly, as though from a long distance.

Little by little I realized that she no longer loved me. Her love had died and it was I who had killed.

One night when I came home the house was empty. Instead of Sophie, there was a note. In it she said that she was leaving me–for ood. She was going home for a couple of days and after that she was going to one person who loved her and needed her. I was to take that as final.

So she did have another person in her life. I suppose that up to then I hadn’t really believed my own suspicions. This confirmation in black and white of my worst fears sent me raving mad. I went to her house as fast as the car would take me.

She was writing a letter when I burst into the room. I could see her face—startled—beautiful—afraid.

I said, “No one but me shall ever have you. No one!”

And, I caught her throat in my hands and gripped it and bent her backwards. She struggled a lot but I was too strong for her.

After a while I loosened my grasp and let her dead body slip onto the floor. Then my eyes fell upon the letter, which she had been writing. It said, “ Dear brother BRIAN, you are the only person who loves me and needs me now…”
